Our first year as a Clinical Commissioning Group
As we come to the end of our first year as Bristol Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG), it is a good time to reflect on some of our key achievements.
The CCG governing body worked with partners to agree our vision, which is ‘Better health and sustainable healthcare for Bristol’.
Placing patients at the heart of commissioning
Together, we are determined to place the patient, their family and their carers at the heart of our commissioning decisions and to embrace the diversity of our local communities.
Clinicians, staff and our governing body members have been working hard over the past year to get the right structures and processes in place so that we can commission high-quality health services for local people.

We have worked closely with Bristol City Council to develop the city’s first Health and Wellbeing Strategy, which sets out priorities for health and social care, following extensive consultation last year.
Some notable achievements over the past 12 months include:
Re-commissioning accessible and high-quality mental health services
In the spring of 2011, NHS Bristol with the support of the shadow CCG took the decision to re-commission Bristol’s mental health services in the light of a view shared by service users, carers, GPs and council colleagues that these services could be improved.
The need for change was supported by feedback from patients and primary care professionals and was also recognised by many of the clinicians delivering the services.

The successful bidders will be announced in June this year.
Bristol to lead the way as dementia-friendly city
We were delighted to secure £200,000 worth of additional funding for Bristol, which will have a significant impact on the quality of life for people living with dementia and their carers.
This funding will help us to raise awareness about how much dementia should be ‘everybody’s business’.
This will broaden the range of support available for people at all stages of dementia and help to underpin the services available through the NHS, the Council and the voluntary sector.
Bristol Community Rose Clinic
In July 2013 Bristol CCG commissioned the Rose Clinic at Lawrence Hill Health Centre. The Rose Clinic provides care and support for women who are experiencing problems as a result of female genital mutilation (FGM).
Women from local communities have been involved in the development of this service from the start and they remain actively involved in supporting it.
Bristol CCG has been working closely with Bristol City Council and a network of statutory agencies, voluntary groups, charities and community representatives with the common goal of educating young people, training professionals such as nurses and police officers, and empowering communities to stop the practice of FGM.
The Partnership’s model was praised by the Home Office last year for its co-ordinated approach in tackling FGM in Bristol and it continues to attract national interest.
Bristol’s pilot for delivering carers’ breaks is receiving national attention and the Department of Health has expressed an interest in the quality of life and economic impact evaluation that we have commissioned from the University of the West of England. Bristol is seen as an area of excellent practice for putting this in place.
So far 900 carers have been able to take a short break, which can support their health and wellbeing and enable them to carry on their valuable caring role for longer.
Leading the way on equality
We are fully committed to adopting an inclusive and innovative approach to meeting the needs of our city's diverse population. This intention is set out in our Equality, Diversity and Human Rights Strategy .
Directors agreed an organisational pledge for NHS Change Day in March this year:
‘Bristol CCG pledges to help make Bristol a place where health inequalities are decreasing. We will do this through our directors and staff spending time in the community with local groups and at local services listening to what patients need.’
Our two- and five-year plans
The CCG is now drafting a five-year strategy and a two-year operational plan. The strategy will draw on information and intelligence from changing population and healthcare trends and information from current provider performance and, more importantly, feedback from our patients and communities about what matters most to them. We will meet our local health challenges by leading transformational change across key priority areas of healthcare. We have 11 delivery theme steering groups, each led by a clinician and a CCG director.
Re-commissioning adult and children’s community services
Our priorities for the next 12 months will include the re-commissioning of both adult and children’s community services.
The public engagement process has already started and a number of events are being planned over the coming months to seek the views of Bristol residents, stakeholders and our member GP practices.
It’s important that everyone gets involved in the conversation to ensure that we commission the best services possible for Bristol.
